Diplomacy Rules

  1. Only one unit can occupy a space at a time.
  2. An army unit can have three different functions: Support another army in a specific action; attack/move; or defend/hold position.
  3. Any unit being attacked is in defensive mode.
  4. Any unit attacking a supporting unit is in flanking mode.
  5. A unit successfully cuts support (flanks) if it is in (4) but not in (3).
  6. If an army is supporting an army owned by a different power than the supporting army must specify a specific action which they are supporting.
  7. A space is considered occupied if there is a unit there with no order to move, or there is a unit there whose orders have failed.
  8. A move is successful if one of the following is true:
    * The destination is unoccupied: This army has more support than any other army trying to move there.
    * The destination is occupied: This army has more support than the army occupying the space has defensive support, and the moving army has more support than any other army trying to move there. The army which occupies the space must retreat or disband.
(Note: if these rules may be construed in more than one way than the correct outcome is the one with the most successful moves.)
  9. Units which lose are selected for the displacement round which occurs before the next normal round occurs: Each unit which is displayed gets to chose where they retreat to. If the unit has no place to retreat to then the unit is automatically disbanded. At this point if the army wishes to surrender then they may.
  10. A supply depot is controlled by the power whose army last occupied the depot’s space.
  11. A home supply depot is one that the power started the game with.
  12. Each power must control one supply depot for each army it has.
  13. Armies > Depots: Must chose army(ies) t o disband.
  14. Armies = Depots: Nothing happens.
  15. Armies < Depots: May build new units in unoccupied home supply depots under the player’s control
  16. A player is removed from the game if he has no armies remaining.
